Blogging Health Check 1
My First blogging health check was quite negative. It's an eye opener for me that I really need to start working harder and blogging more frequently. This is my target.

Previous Student Video
4. Shannon, Martyna, Rhiana, Esther from 283goswellg on Vimeo.
I looked at a previous music video by Shannon, Maryna, Rhiana and Esther. I really liked the video and think that it goes with the song really well. I particularly like the jump cuts in time with the beat, and how the colours and transitions slow down when the song slows down.Shia LaBeouf Slow Clap
Carol Vernallis' Music Video Theory
As well as Andrew Goodwin, whose music video theory I just researched, Carol Vernallis also has a music video theory. However, the theory is different.
Vernallis' theory about music video structure says that narratives in music videos aren't always complete. She also says that music videos are not always balanced between narrative and performance as well as the videos not always having a narrative resolution at the end.
However, she also observed the edits in music videos and she has said that edits in music videos are a lot more frequent that in films which has a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song. She has said that:
- The usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen.
- Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to themselves such as special effects added.
- Jump Cuts are often used
- A master shot, also known as a base track, is frequently used to give the video a structure.
- The camera may move in time with the music.
Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande is an example of a video that uses jump cuts as well base tracks and a variety of close ups.
Black Magic by Little Mix is a music video that contains obvious edits and special effects which draws attention to what is on the screen.

He believes that there are 3 different types of narrative structures:
1. Pop music videos are created around the lyrics of a song which do not follow traditional narrative structures
2. The singer is both the narrator and character
3. The singer usually looks directly at the camera - they try to create a connection with the viewer
Illustration - this is where the music video tells the story of the lyrics
Example: We Don't Talk Anymore - Charlie Puth
The song is about a couple that have broken up and how they've found new people. However, they still think about how the other person is doing and that they miss each other. The video shows the aftermath of the breakup and how they go through the same emotions together but separately. It shows how they're dealing with the breakup in a split screen.

Amplification - the video includes new meanings that don't contradict with the lyrics but there are additional meanings Example: Hands To Myself - Selena Gomez
In this music video, we see the character being very obsessed with a male to the point where she breaks into his house. The music video links with the lyrics where Selena is being all sexy but there are additional meanings such as her obsession.
Disjuncture - there isn't much of a connection between the video and the lyrics
Example: Stay With Me - Sam Smith
The lyrics are related to love and desperately wanting someone to stay. However, the video just shows Sam Smith walking/sitting in different settings. The video doesn't really represent the lyrics/story that is told.

Summer Work Storyboard
I remade the first minute of the music video of 'Hollow' by Tori Kelly using a website called storyboardthat.com
Music Video Remake
At the end of the AS year, we were put into groups and remade the first 40 seconds of a music video. My group remade 'Lush Life' by Zara Larsson.
In the video, we included 5 different base tracks. 3 of Petya in the main outfit but we used different shots; close up, medium shot and long shot. The other two were in two different outfits.
